Buy Or Don’t Buy

This is going to sound really morbid, but, hey! Brooklyn’s hipster capital is finally regaining some of its lost street cred.

Just when you thought the entire nabe had been sold to the whims of developers, and the toughest choice residents had to make was deciding between a 6th floor 2 bedroom with a parking space, or a 10th floor 2 bedroom with a better view, some locals go and stir some shit up with their ‘gang related violence’ and whatnot.

Williamsburg was the very first neighborhood in Brooklyn to receive a veritable influx of hipsters. Over the course of the late 90s and the early aughts, young, post-college white kids with a predilection for indie music and cheap rent started taking over. Then followed the early adopters. Then the Manhattan yuppies. Then the Bridge and Tunnel crowd. With the introduction of mediocrity also came the impression of safety. Unlike the luxury condo buildings now peppering the landscape, this was not meant to last.

Over the past two months, there have been a string of random stabbings around the area, which has resulted in an equally concerning police presence. I remember going to visit my friend one weekend on S. 3rd and Havemeyer, to be encountered by gangs of cops on every single corner. They had been imported mainly to calm the residents, and instill some sense of order in the midst of a crime wave, but they were also tryin’ to catch someone ridin’ dirty.

This past weekend saw another crime wave. Again, mostly in the South. And apparently the evidence is still knocking about, if anyone is into collecting teeth and bloody hats. Marcy stop, JMZ.
