Don’t Buy: Natalie Portman’s Latest Choices
Natalie Portman killed it in V for Vendetta. She even shaved her head for the role (and pulled it off). And that, I believe, is what lead her down the path of not buy-able. Sure, she’s cute and pretty and a great actress or whatever (just ask Nate), but as far as her latest decisions are going… she’s turning into a goddamn hippie. I am not buying:
The Boyfriend
She started dating Devendra Banhart. He’s a Venezuelan-American folk rocker, who’s music I do enjoy on occasion, but more importantly, he’s grungy and weird. For being Marc Jacob’s muse and all, what are you doing putting your pretty little self with someone who resembles the Big Bad Wolf combined with Chong (from Cheech & Chong)?
Music Video:
This past week, a music video from Devendra (which is totally a girl’s name) Banhart was released. It’s for his song “Carmenista”. It’s ridiculous. It’s not even “artsy”. It’s not cute, or funny, or smart. The hipster in me doesn’t even find amusement in it. The song isn’t even that good. She looks like a Bollywood version of Padmé from Star Wars. If I had a boyfriend and he asked me to be in a video, I’d say yes. But as soon as I heard the lame concept, no way! The evidence is below.
Being Environmentally Green
So, this is probably old news, but apparently she has a line of vegan footwear? What? Yeah, she’s been a vegetarian since the age of 8. But for being “green” footwear, they sure cost a lot of that green cash money. (Not to mention, I always found vegetarianism strange. We have incisors for a reason.)
Project Runway Guest Appearance
And because of her footwear line, she was invited onto Project Runway this week. And this breaks my heart… Miss Cutie, Harvard graduate and everything else I ever liked about her seemed to have disappeared. When she walked down that runway, she does not look good. My dad, who watched Project Runway with me, asks, “Is she supposed to be pretty?”. She was. She was even pretty with a shaved head. But now, her style, her hair, her dress, even her walk… just isn’t the same. And as a judge, she seemed to even stumble over words. If you don’t like it, don’t awkwardly say you do. If you do like it, make it sincere. (BTW: I am not calling her ugly, because that’s not possible, but as far as elegance and grace, she’s lost a little bit of that.)
I just don’t know. Those latest promoted decisions just left a bad taste in my mouth. Eco-friendly is getting played out, guest appearances only work when you are completely charming and dirty boyfriends only work when you are equally dirty. Natalie take me back to the days when you would rap. The good old days like:

So, that music video: Everyone seems to hate it. I thought it was brilliant.
Looks like it was fun to make. Also, you can’t take yourself seriously 100% of the time.
All your other evidence I agree with.
Don’t Buy: Devendra Banhart’s pubic hair
I think she’s always been kind of overrated but she was NOT looking good on PR. And that video makes my brain hurt.
As for the $200+ vegan shoes, you could buy ones that look just them for about $20 at Payless, and guess what - those aren’t made of real leather either!
I was gonna make a pay less joke in there.. but didn’t. Glad we are on the same page.
Winona rules!
