Buy Or Don’t Buy

When I told a friend of mine that I was thinking about writing about RDJ, her response was “too easy”. Well duh. He’s a movie star that I actually like. He combines the right amount of edginess, skill and humor to the rolls he plays. The last few movies I saw him in he continued to up my expectations of him. And with a trailer released for his next film, Tropic Thunder (directed by Ben Stiller), my expectations are even higher.

In case you are confused, he’s Kirk Lazarus, an Australian white male, playing a black American male in Vietnam. He is taking on race relations in an (hopefully) entertaining way as opposed to another “important” and “praiseworthy” speech. As far as this little white lady knows, I don’t think racial issues have ever been taken on in a major studio comedy.

Obviously this is a huge risk, especially for Downey. Brandon T. Jackson’s, Downey’s black costar, remarks to People will hopefully reflect what critics will say when the movie hits theaters.

“To be honest, he played a black dude better than anybody I’ve seen! [...]When I first read the script, I was like: What? Black face? But when I saw him [act] he, like, became a black man,” (People)

It’s fair to say the RDJ rocks. His performance in Iron Man led to the movie to make $560 million worldwide. And even more recently, RDJ was cast in Sherlock Holmes, which will also star Sascha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell. He’s definitely come a long way since his series of arrests, getting kicked off Ally McBeal, drug abusin’ in the 90’s, and serving about a year and half in jail.

And to that, I say, Cheers to you, RDJ. You work hard for your money, you might as well spend it as you will. I’m glad it doesn’t seem like that’s drugs anymore. Hell, if he wrote a memoir, I’d buy that too! And as a closing note, he looks pretty good, doesn’t he, ladies (and gents)?
