Buy: Lock-Ins

Ich habe excitement for TAKEOVER BAM tomorrow night. TAKEOVER is an adult lock-in at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. They play movies all night in the four theaters, with each theater having a different theme. This year: “Up All Night in 1985″ (kicking off with highlighted movie trailers from my birth year, seguing into the kitschy Bruce Lee takeoff The Last Dragon), “Bring Back the Draught!” (ft The Saddest Music in the World. When I first saw this movie, I thought it was actually from the 1930’s. Then I remembered that the Kids in the Hall guy was in Kids in the Hall.), “The Reel World: Brooklyn” (nice copy! Spike Lee and stuff), and the last theater just plays Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom. Also there’re bands and choirs that our man Sufjan coordinated playing in the concert hall. Will you look at the admin skills on that guy! And arcade games and dj’s and cheap Magic Hat. Like sugar!

Sugar, the main ingredient to those lock-ins for the 10-15 year-old years. Some of the best nights of my childhood were spent away from my broken home and in a building with chaperones who did care. Pounds of junk food? check. Roller skating? checkers. Giant woolly mammoth hovering over you as you sleep? checkmate, we win.

The museum lock-ins reign the supremest. What a luxury to learn whilst you sleep! Dost anyone interject, harboring feelings of opposing positions? Speak now, orst forever hold. Tis all.

Yes! Everyone knows that being really tired is like being really drunk.

This is the only lock-in I’ve ever been to where you can just get up and leave whenever you want.

Either that or I totally broke the rules last year!

About ten years ago at Disney World, we realized the time in the middle of the Terminator simulation right after they said (”You cannot escape. The doors are locked. You cannot leave.”), and our plane was leaving in an hour. That kind of relates to Ryan’s comment above.

Also, what does that say about our society’s emphasis on control over the youth and autonomy of the elderly? A lot.

  4. I’m excited. Eff any of the naysayers!>1
