Don’t Buy: Electro Music Videos
There has been an onslaught of annoyingly awful music videos. I mean, hell, anyone can make a music video. But for some reason they just get worse and worse.
Like Ratatat’s Shempi:
It is just scary. The morphing faces? Non-synced singing? What? Why? In fact, this will probably give me nightmares. At least there for a few parts that kinda match the song.
Unlike Crystal Castles’ Crimewave.
I know they’re Canadian, and I know she is an alt-bag, but really? I don’t get it. The song, one of the many good ones on their self-titled album, is slightly lessened due to the unrelated video. Why is she shaking like that? Is it cold? Or is she addicted crack? The music lends itself to so much more, but stops short.
I know good music videos can be done. Just check out Justice’s multiple videos as evidence. So that “hipster”, “too cool for school” excuse is unacceptable!

Well, Sara, first of all, Ratatat aren’t trying to necessarily make sense to you. They are probably TRYING to give you a nightmare or two, because they take the faces of the iconic and famously JOYFUL 70’s Swedish foursome, ABBA and turn them into scary monsters. If you’ll do a little YT search, you’ll find that they’ve also done a similar thing by morphing the poppy happy go-lucky Chevy Chase, as well as Paul Simon in the video for “You Can Call Me Al” for another song on their newest album, LP3. (See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw9hjeQhDMY) . Chevy, Paul, and the Abba Four aren’t supposed to be having a singalong to Ratatat’s digi-beats and guitar strums. Sorry. I know it’s hard to wrap your head around.
Now, secondly, as for being “too cool for school” etc, you must remember neither of the artists mentioned probably made these videos themselves. The concept was created by a music video/creative director, who first delivers what is called “a treatment” to the band– then the band (and their handlers– manager, record label– peeps with the $$$$– approve. Sometimes the video ends up looking like they thought it would, sometimes it doesn’t (Usually depends on how much time and money you have to spend.) D.A.N.C.E. was totally rad, but it probably cost around $20,000.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ MUSIC VIDEO EXPERT ALERT!
Hey, I kind of liked that first one!
