Don’t Buy: Sci-fi Psychobabble
[OR: "Nate reads The Writer's Journey and gets really pissed off"]
Watch the opening of this clip and tell me how it relates to any recognizable human behavior. Why would you drive a car all the way into to a giant hole and then jam the brakes and jump out of it at the last minute?
Oh, because you need to show that young JT “always had a hard time finding [his] place in this world. Never knowing [his] true worth.” Boo fucking hoo. Why do we need to do this over and over and over again? Spiderman and Batman and Anakin Sywalker and Lee Adama and Eragon and the Twilight vampire and every other sci-fi hero all have the same goddamn problem. I don’t need Kirk and Spock moping around too.
I love Alan Moore, but this is probably entirely his fault.

I know. All these “strong characters” are pretty lame. Like Superman had kryptonite, but that was it (and he was also an orphan). The inner demon thing is so old. Batman had parent/revenge issues. But Startrek, I didn’t care where they came from.
