Buy: Cult Shows (Potentially) Hit The Big Screen

How does a television show get a cult following?

1. It’s good and usually has a strange sense of humor
2. It gets canceled.

So it’s awesome that 2 of my favorite shows are (rumored) to be made into motion pictures!! What are they?

1. Arrested Development
2. Veronica Mars

Let’s start with Arrested Development.

If you haven’t seen the show, then I suggest you head over to Hulu and watch every episode you can. Anyways, the facts and rumors about AD are:

1. Script is done and it’s AMAZING.

“It’s typically bent and twisted,’ Bateman said of the story concocted by series mastermind Mitchell Hurwitz. ‘He’s got a really, really good idea for the movie version that would not be just simply the equivalent of four episodes back to back to back. It’s actually something that would be specific to the medium of film.”(source)

2. The biggest problem is money.

“We all want to do it. All the actors want to do it, the writers want to do it, and the boss wants to do it. And they are working on making a deal, probably as we speak,” Bateman said. “But it’s a long, sort of drawn-out, complicated business process. ‘Arrested Development’ is such a specific tone, it doesn’t lend itself to mass appeal, as played out by the fact that it’s canceled. So it has to be done for a price.”(source)

3. Someone is being a little baby about it.

Michael Cera, who plays the affable George-Michael Bluth in the television series, is reportedly the only cast member who has not signed on to the movie. (Source)

4. Ron Howard is directing and it has an IMDB page!

(Also: David Cross knows why the show got canceled… here)

Now for Veronica Mars.

Veronica Mars was canceled only a few years ago and it was not ready to say good-bye. With our heroine walking away in the rain as her world is about to turn to shit, fans have been craving for resolution or any continuation of the story. Here are the facts:

1. Writer Rob Thomas has ideas and time to write out a script for V. Mars

Rob Thomas announced that he’s currently working on a Veronica Mars feature film (based on his short-lived UPN/CW show), now that his new series[Cupid] order has been reduced from thirteen episodes to eight episodes. (source)

2. Money is an issue

3. Everyone is on board!

[Thomas said,] “My writing the movie is half the battle. Someone else has to pay for it. [Producer] Joel Silver does have a certain pile of money. He called me saying ‘Can we do this now?’ Kristen wants to do it. Joel wants to do it and I want to do it. For me, that’s the next project.”

4. The movie wouldn’t go with the stupid plot line implied in the series.

“I know we did that F.B.I. what if thing, but we would not go to that place, said Thomas. I think it would open just days before the Hearst College Graduation. So Veronica would be sort of at the end of her college career. (Thomas) (Source)

We do have to keep in mind that none of these has all the elements in place. But it’s still exciting. And really guessing and hoping is pretty exciting too. I’m excited to see cult graphic novel Watchmen to hit theaters in a few months. And really, just wait a year or two and then we’ll be hearing about a Pushing Daisies movie.
