Don’t Buy: Oscar Season

Around this time every year, fantastic films are shown in mainstream theaters nationwide. The violent and explosive blockbusters are put to the side as Oscar-worthy films are projected on the big screen. So what happened this year? Am I missing something?

What’s out there?
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button? Too long of an effort-full epic drama. The Dark Knight? A semi flawed, over hyped eulogy? Doubt? Even Meryl Steep doesn’t believe in that project. And Slumdog Millionaire? A trite coverage of the slums of India with an under-developed love story. At least Wall-E, in my opinion, is worthy of a win.

Where’s this year’s No Country For Old Men? Or Departed?

Wait, come to think of it… the past years were equally disappointing. I can’t think of a season in recent years where there were multiple releases that I just had to see. Look at the last couple years winners and even nominees. The movies and the celebration of movies just aren’t what they used to be. Now I sound like Mickey Rooney, a cranky, complaining, old man.

I’d like to hear what you think is worthy of an Oscar.

    IT’S OSCAR TIME!!

Why DID the movies suck so hard this year? Writer’s strike carryover?

I vote Batman, Cloverfield, and…Persepolis? I didn’t even see it. I’ve been watching ads all year. Maybe this year they will give an Oscar to an ad.

I don’t think the movies sucked this year - there were a lot I really enjoyed - BUT there aren’t any that smacked me over the head with awesomeness. 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days was really good, but also terrifying and depressing and Romanian, so that doesn’t have a chance at anything but Best Foreign. I liked Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button, but they weren’t as good as the best in past years. And I loved The Dark Knight, I mean who didn’t, but does anyone remember the giant gaping PLOT HOLES?!

Best trailer goes to The Dark Knight. Why isn’t this a category yet?

Was Persepolis this year? Lovely animation, but it can’t hold a candle to Wall-E in the age of high def sound & vision. But Speed Racer could… does that count as animation?

I was very fond of Burn After Reading but unfortunately many people burned their memoery of it after watching it. The Coens might have taken strange-serious humor to a level we’re not yet ready for.

    Whatever happened to Australia?

Movie I learned the most from: Tropic Thunder. Discovering personal identity far outweighs the Joker’s morality tests.

Persepolis was last year. It was at least nominated but I don’t think it won.

And I read somewhere that Tropic Thunder might be nominated a few times, so we’ll see on that one
