So news of a book which adds zombies to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has been floating around the Internet. It’s too late to write a post on that, but trust me, it looks pretty awesome. That book itself is a mash-up, 85% original text, 15% zombies. But now, the book has not been released yet, and really, now it doesn’t have to be.
Hollywood studios are bidding to turn a radical reworking of Austen’s most popular book, now called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a parody to be published in April, into a blockbuster movie. (source)
I love parody zombie movies. Think: Shawn of the Dead, or Land of the Dead (yes, that was pretty much a parody) only Victorian-ized. Now, these things are hit or miss. I have a feeling this is going to be a hit based on this paragraph:
“It quickly became obvious that Jane [Austen] had laid down the blueprint for a zombie novel,” said Grahame-Smith, a television comedy writer. “Why else in the original should a regiment arrive on Lizzie Bennet’s doorstep when they should have been off fighting Napoleon? It was to protect the family from an invasion of brain-eaters, obviously.”
See, awesome. But, this could lead to a craziness of mash-ups that I am not ready to be a part of. For example, Pride and Predator (with Elton John collaborating)? Too far? Too good?
