BODB: Away We Go
I can’t decide how I feel about this movie. I know nothing about it except what I saw in the trailer. Let me know what you think:
Pros:
- Great cast
- thought provoking
- A probably slightly funny coming-of-age movie
- will probably make me cry
Cons:
- Trite
- Depressing
- Wrong dose of quirkiness?
Details:
Hitting theaters June 11th, 2009. It has the Office’s John Krasinski (humor cred), Jim Gaffigan (comedian cred), and Maggie Gyllenhaal(serious indie cred). What do you think? Right now, I’m leaning towards it ending up too much like Juno when she is having a mid-life crisis.

I’m thinking it will be a buy, though I’m a little hesitant. The trailer may have just shown the good parts and the actual movie may be weak (see Mean Creek or Imaginary Heroes). It may also be trying way too hard to be indie. But there is a some real talent behind this film. It’s a tough call.
The cutesy animated intertitles make me instantly hate it. Allison Janney helps a little bit, but then she couldn’t save Juno, either.
Don’t Buys:
“We’re 34.” “33.” “And we don’t even have this basic stuff figured out.”
The scene on the people-mover
Old people moving to Antwerp
Generally any part where characters stop acting like real people for the sake of indie-quirk
Buys:
