Don’t Buy: Russell Brand’s typecast
I hate type casting. But Brand came to America already with his one-stop character built, packaged and ready to go. So what is he doing now? Keeping it. Promoting it. And generally annoying me with it.

The amount of experience I have with Brand is probably about average to the average American. I saw him in Forgetting Sarah Marshall where he played a British rocker who does what he wants, when he wants in a feminine but sexually masculine way. He then took the stage with his whiny voice and tight pants during MTV’s Video Music Awards. And most recently, I saw ads for a Comedy Central special featuring his stand up.
But what about him is worth watching? His character is not endearing. He is not actually a rock star, so I have no reason to praise him as such. I just don’t get it. Maybe I am too American? Maybe I have a sense of humor? I don’t know. Either way, Brand does not make me laugh on his own.
But for some reason he keeps coming back. Rumor has it that he’ll be joining the cast for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 as Jack’s brother. Lucky for him, he won’t have to take off his mascara for that project either.
And if you think I am judging too harshly, stop and evaluate. I’m saying he plays the same character, and if not that character exactly, he adapts it enough so he could practically say the same lines. In fact, he is adapting his character from the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall into a spin-off movie called Get Him to the Creek. And where did he announce this great change and exemplify his talent? The Jimmy Fallon show.
I’m playing that character, Aidous Snow again, in a movie that Judd Apatow is producing. I’m starring alongside the brilliant actor Jonah Hill. [In the movie] Aidous Snow has gone back on drugs and Jonah Hill is his friend and they go on many adventures together. It’s very exciting.
Watch the stimulating clip below. Note: Fallon needs to explain what A- means for a book review, Brand mentions the term estrogen too many times. What is that accent?!? This duo is actually painful to watch, so proceed with caution.
Fallon introduced this star as “very talented”. Nuff said.
