Don’t Buy: Parks and Recreation

BODB, being cutting edge as usual, posted a Buy about Parks and Recreation before it was even titled. I have to disagree.

Tonight, I watched an episode of this Amy Poehler-starring, Office writer-written show. And I was unimpressed. Poehler’s character of Lindsey was practically Michael Scott in a skirt. She leads a team of unenthused workers with an upbeat and overly excited energy. She tries to do the right thing, but those efforts always fall flat after either saying something wrong or falling down a hill.

I mean seriously! The Office is all about selling paper. Parks and Recreation is about selling the idea of planting trees in a park like formation. The similarities pretty much hit you in the face. Remember when the Office had hour long episodes and it didn’t work out, so they went back to the half hour format? Well, with this line up, it’s the same issue again, too much of the same.

Now, if you think I am being too hard on the show after only seeing one episode, and it airing only two episodes so far, well that may be. But I had only 4 expectations:

  • It’s not the Office
  • Amy Poehler
  • Aziz Ansari
  • Good Laughs
It did meet 50% of my expectations, it did have those two actors in it. Parks and Recreation seems to be the next show in NBC’s line up that was created to replace a dying out show. So, P&R is replacing the Office. Remake of Australian show: Kath and Kim replaced the remake of the British show: Couples, Howie Do It replaced Deal Or No Deal, and Southland replacing ER.
But it is only the second episode, so it can turn around. Until then, it will still be a don’t buy.

I didn’t see tonight’s episode but I did see the first one, and I was disappointed too. For one thing, even though I generally find him hilarious, there’s something very off about Aziz Ansari on this show. The whole scene with him openly hitting on Rashida Jones was WAY too obvious and unsubtle for it to work in the “documentary” format. It seems to be a combination of how his character is written, and how he plays him.

And Rashida Jones still sucks in everything, ever. She was not funny on The Office…she was not funny in I Love You, Man…she is not funny on Parks & Recreations. I know she’s supposed to be the straight man, but she’s no good at it. So stop casting her in damn comedies.

  2. I disagree, I think you should definitely BUY the show. It’s very funny.

To Alli, you can watch the second episode here: http://watchparksandrecreation.com/season-1-episode-2-canvassing/
