Buy or Don’t Buy: No cars in Times Square

via AP:

“Sections of Broadway from 47th to 42nd streets and 35th to 33rd streets have been closed to cars in a city effort to reduce traffic and pollution and cut down on pedestrian accidents.

A movie will be shown on a giant screen and street performers are expected to help celebrate the newly created pedestrian mall in Times Square on Monday. Beach chairs will be set out for the crowds.”

wut?

I am at a loss on this one… You kids decide.

Don’t buy. It’s already a playground for tourists who are looking for the “real” New York. Now Times Square is already a campy section of the big apple, this is just the icing on the top.

Basically, but not letting cars through they are really hinting to residents and “New Yorkers” to stay away from the area and make it a bit more difficult to get to (ignore that most subway lines go there).

I don’t think anyone goes to Times Square thinking it’s the “real” NY. I mean, there’s a giant Olive Garden. Tourists are the only ones who really go there anyway, so why not make it more pedestrian friendly? With street performers it could even be like a less-cool Las Ramblas.
