BODB: Space Invaders Screen Adaptation

Space Invaders, a “beloved” arcade game is in the works of being made into a movie. The game has no plot. It involves shooting at alien looking things coming towards earth. This is not the first time the game has been adapted into something beyond the video game. It has been on t-shirts, in music videos and viral videos, etc. So really there’s nothing stopping it from becoming a movie.

Here is the description of what this plotless game will be about:

Doug, the space shuttle janitor, watches helplessly as his astronaut girlfriend heads off on a 3 month International Space Station mission with Stamp Majors, all-American astronaut superstar and philanthropist (think a cross between a real life version of Buzz Lightyear, and the character Owen Wilson plays in Meet The Parents). He begins to think that the two are getting it on and decides to…um…intervene. Really liked this one. It’s pretty broad but there are some great touches. We’ve all been in that position where our boyfriend/girlfriend is going to be in close quarters with some attractive dude/chick for a weekend trip or something and in the back of our minds are thinking, “Should I go there?” Of course we never do (well, ahem, most of the time we don’t) but in this case Doug takes it to the extreme, and decides to actually fly his way up to the International Space Station to make sure his girlfriend doesn’t bang Stamp . It’s a buy:

  • Space Invaders never had a plot, so it’s not like it’s ruining the original
  • Will Arnett is attached to this project somehow
  • Justin Theroux is writing and starring (he’s penned Iron Man 2 and Tropic Thunder and he’s good lookin’)
  • Has both nerd and mainstream potential

It’s a don’t buy:

  • As of now, it doesn’t sound very original
  • It screams Jesse Eisenberg or Ben Stiller RomCom
  • Will Arnett might star in it. (Will Arnett isn’t very strong in movies, i.e. The Brothers Solomon & Let’s Go to Prison)
  • They referenced Owen Wilson’s character in Meet the Parents in the very first draft.

What do you guys think? Worthwhile? Does it have the potential to be awesome?
