Nate Jones

Nate Jones won the bronze medal in Heavyweight boxing in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was drafted in the 7th round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, signing with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent in 2008. Before his retirement, he also served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He died in December 2003 after assaulting Cincinnati police and resisting their attempts to arrest him. The fact that Jones weighed almost 350 pounds increased both the publicity surrounding the case, and the questions about whether the amount of force used to subdue him was necessary.

Jones was immortalized in a 1971 single by The Supremes, which peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Pop chart. He was played by Ving Rhames in the 1997 film “Con Air”.
